As a parent you know your kids pick up EVERYTHING you do. The good and the bad. This is true about everything including where your time is spent, what your conversations are about, and how you prioritize different things. What we do as parents is even more important then what we say.
If you as a parent are trying to teach your child about loving their enemy and then you make snide comments about the childs opponent before the game, your kids hear that.
If you as a parent are trying to teach your child about grace and then are loudly disagreeing with the referee for a bad call, your kids see and hear that.
If you as a parent are trying to teach your child about not having idols and then talk endlessley or reverently about your favorite athlete/sport more than you do about God or His Word, your kids see and hear that.
If you as a parent are trying to teach your child about forgiveness and make one of many mistakes while watching or playing a sports activity and then apologize to your child, your kids see that.
You get the idea, kids see as much as they listen and listen more than you think they do. Unfortunately, we are all human, we all make mistakes.
I’ve seen pastors cussing while playing sports, I’ve seen missionaries get the most penalties in a league, I’ve heard deacons say they can’t be expected to act Christ like once they start playing. People that we as adults watch! Our kids are watching us.
It’s not sports that are bad though, it’s our own human nature. We will make mistakes while playing/watching sports, and while driving down the road. The biggest thing we can do is apologize to those observing us.
